Sister Irma Burns CSC

Sister Irma CSC, former president and superior of St. Mary’s College, died Monday in Saint Mary’s Convent after a long illness. She served as president of the college from 1931 to 1934, when she was succeeded by Sr. M. Madelva CSC. From 1942 to 1945 she was superior of the college. She had a long teaching career and was stationed at Plymouth and Logansport in Indiana; Washington DC; Austin and Marshall in Texas; St. Joseph Academy in South Bend; Alexandria, Va.; Lancaster, Pa.; Boise, Idaho; and Salt Lake City, Utah. She taught at St. Mary’s College from 1900 to 1908. In 1945 was was assigned to the Provincial House and had resided at the convent since her retirement. She was born Mary Agnes Burns in Chicago in 1891 and received her early education in Chicago and Morris, Ill. She entered the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1889 and made her professional vows in 1891.

 

Services will be at 7 a.m. Wednesday in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto on the St. Mary’s campus and burial will be in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery there. Friends may call at the convent parlor until 8 p.m. today.
