Winnie D. Butcher

SOUTH BEND - Winnie D. Butcher, 81, of Southbrook Drive, died at 8:15 a.m. Thursday in Muhlenberg Hospital, Plainfield, N.J., after being hospitalized while visiting her daughter in Scotch Plains, N.J. Mrs. Butcher retired in 1968 from the U.S. Postal Service after 17 years of service. She was born Dec. 21, 1913, in Cassopolis and was a lifelong area resident.

 

On June 10, 1932, in Mishawaka, as Winnie D. Shanafelt, she married Louis Neal Butcher. He died Aug. 27, 1995. Surviving are a daughter, Judy Corrello of Scotch Plains; a son, Larry of Tellico Village, Tenn.; five grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. She was a member of Cathedral of St. James Episcopal Church, Indiana Historical Society, National Association of Letter Carriers, National Audubon Society, and Pythian Sisters Moonlight Temple 255, where she served as secretary/treasurer. She was in the first graduating class of Riley High School in 1931.

 

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Hollis-Orvis-Palmer Funeral Home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society or National Audubon Society.
