Verna Dean Carter

GRANGER - Verna Dean Carter, 77, of Pelzer, SC, formerly of Granger, IN, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 18th, at the residence of her niece in Dowagiac, MI. She was born on February 18, 1931, in Clovis, NM, to the late Dovie (Plott) and Harry Smith. On March 11, 1989, in South Bend, IN, she married Gene Carter, who preceded her in death on June 8, 2004. Mrs. Carter was also preceded in death by a daughter, Paula Hopson; three sisters, Imogene Muff, Mildred Boling and Mary Harlen; and by a brother, Paul Smith. Mrs. Carter is survived by two daughters, Julia Kay (Wayne) Terwilliger of Farmington Hills, MI, and Tabby (Nanci Cheek) Schultz of Pelzer, SC; and a son, Roger D. (Nancy) Schultz of Avon, IN. She had the privilege of being a stepmother to Janis (Casper) Slisz, Dennis (Judy), Bruce, William J. and Kevin L. (Carol) Carter. She was a grandmother of 17, a great-grandmother to 19, and a great-great-grandmother to one. She is also survived by a sister, Jeanette (Richard) Hall of Dowagiac, MI. Mrs. Carter was a nurse and was the former owner of Burger Dairy Store in River Park. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, South Bend. Mrs. Carter was a loving, caring and compassionate person, and will be greatly missed by all of those whose lives she touched.

 

Services for Mrs. Carter will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, in Westminster Presbyterian Church, South Bend, where friends may call from 11 a.m. until services time. Rev. Karen Brugler, pastor of the church, will conduct the services. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Welsheimer Family Funeral Homes assisted the family with arrangements. The family request that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart Association, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674; or to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1501 W. Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46628.
