Sister Adelaide Cassiday

Sister Adelaide Cassiday (Sister M. Thomasina), CSC, 94, was born in Altoona, PA, to the late Thomas P. and Mary Ellen O'Connell Cassiday. She was second of four daughters, two of whom, Sister Anna Marie Cassiday and Sister M. Corona, Sisters of the Holy Cross, and her other sister have predeceased her. Sister is survived by her niece, Janet Anticich, Peg Schlairet, Jack Schlairet, Susan Livingston, and other nieces and nephews.

 

Sister graduated from Sacred Heart Academy, Lancaster, PA, and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1929. She continued her education at Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, IN, Catholic University and Dunbarton College of Holy Cross, Washington, D.C., and Case Western Reserve, OH. Sister graduated with degrees in French and Spanish. She trained as a teacher and taught in elementary schools from 1932 until 1950. When she moved to high schools she taught French and Spanish, was a counselor for a year, supervisor for six years, and religious superior and principal for three years. Sister, in 1975, was librarian for the Diocesan Office of Education, Washington, D.C. She retired to Saint Mary's and was active in volunteer services and librarian aide for the convent until 1992. Sister was active in the Ministry of Prayer until her death.
