Sister Maria C. Cauley

Aug. 19, 1906 - July 17, 2002

Sister Maria Compassionata (Margaret Louise Cauley), CSC, 95, was born in London, Ohio, to the late Edward Joseph Cauley and Mary Lanigan Cauley.

She is survived by her niece, Karen Nolan of Marysville, Ohio; and cousins, John Patrick Gibboney of Columbus, Ohio, and Ruth Anne Dingeldein of Springfield, Ohio.

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross in 1928 and made final profession in 1934. She graduated from Mount Carmel School of Nursing in Columbus, Ohio, in 1928 and received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Saint Louis University, St. Louis, Mo., in 1937.

Sister was the director of Saint Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing, South Bend, Ind., from 1934-1936, and of Our Savior's Hospital School of Nursing, Jacksonville, Ill., from 1937-1938. She was assigned as nursing supervisor for 25 years in several hospitals including Holy Cross Hospital, Salt Lake City, Utah, Saint Joseph's Hospital, South Bend, and Mount Carmel Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. Sister was in hospital administration for three years at Holy Cross Hospital, Salt Lake City, and for six years at Saint Alphonsus' Hospital, Boise, Idaho. From 1969 to 1987, she was assigned in pastoral services at Mount Carmel Hospital, Columbus, Ohio. In 1987, Sister retired to Saint Mary's Convent and was in service to the community and ministry of prayer until her death.

Wake services will be at 4 p.m. today in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN.
