Joseph Paul Cherpes: (South Bend Tribune 12/6/1977)
Joseph Paul Cherpes, 77, of 1718 W. Indiana, died early today in his residence after an extended illness. He was retired from White Farm Equipment Co. He was born on Nov. 18, 1900, in South Bend, and had lived here all his life. On Sept. 9, 1924, in South Bend, he married Sophie Nowicki, who survives with a daughter, Mrs. Betty Jane Gerad of Bolingbrook, Ill.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Catherine Daveline of San Jose, Calif., and a brother, Stephen of South Bend. Cherpes was a member of the Musician’s Union, Indiana Polka Hall of Fame, Fraternal Order of Eagles and Fraternal Order of Ben Hur. The St. Joseph Funeral Home is in charge of arrangement.
