Mrs. Sophie H. Cherpes: (South Bend Tribune 5/18/1980)
Mrs. Sophie H. Cherpes, 75, of 1718 W. Indiana, died at 5 p.m. Saturday in St. Joseph’s Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was a retired Gerber Manufacturing Co., Mishawaka, employee. Born on May 7, 1905, in South Bend, she had lived here all her life. On Sept. 9, 1924, in South Bend, as Sophie Nowicki, she married Joseph P. Cherpes, who died on Sept. 6, 1977. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Betty Jane Gerad of Bolingbrook, Ill.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Josephine Varga, Mrs. Blanche Odor and Mrs. Jane Klimek, all of South Bend, and a brother, Edward Nowicki of South Bend. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Casimir’s Catholic Church. Rev. Howard Kuhns, C.S.C., will officiate. Burial will be in Resurrection Gardens Mausoleum in St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 9 p.m. Monday in the St. Joseph Funeral Home. Mrs. Cherpes was a member of Chapter 39, Disabled American Veterans, and the Army-Navy Auxiliary.
