Elsie M. Chikar, 85, of Westwood Drive, passed away at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Chikar retired in 1981 from South Bend Toy where she had been employed for 30 years. She was a member of Bowlers Country Club, St. Patrick's Church, and the Forever Learning Center. Elsie was born on Nov. 24, 1915, in South Bend, Ind., to Joseph and Irma Horvath.

 

On July 16, 1938, in South Bend, as Elsie Horvath, she married John J. Chikar, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Kathryn (Joseph) Jimenez of Norwalk, Conn.; and a sister, Violet Wirth of South Bend. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Erma Gosztola, Ann Landesman, Elizabeth Murphy and Margaret Horvath; and by three brothers, Zoles Horvath, Ernest Horvath and Joseph Horvath.

 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 15, in St. Hedwig Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. today in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Patrick's Church Building Fund.
