Elizabeth Ann Christman Ph.D.

Feb. 4, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Christman, Elizabeth Ann, Ph.D., died peacefully on February 4, 2010. Dear daughter of the late Genevieve and Roy Christman of Webster Groves, MO. Beloved sister of Dave (and the late Velma) Christman and Mary Ellen Hyde Mooney. Cherished aunt, cousin, teacher, bridge partner, colleague and exceptional friend to many. She was preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Margaret (Bill) Paynter and Sara Lee Christman; and her brothers, William (Marian) Christman and Edwin (Jane) Christman. Liz, as she was known to all who loved her, was delightful, witty, kind-hearted and generous. She was an honored graduate of Nerinx Hall High School and Webster University. She joined the WAVES in WW II and after her discharge she moved to New York to get in the publishing business. She was with the firm Harold Ober Associates for 20 years associating with notable writers such as William Faulkner, Pearl S. Buck, Agatha Christie and J.D. Salinger. In 1968 she gave up her life in New York to pursue a career in teaching at DePauw University. She completed her Ph.D. from New York University while at DePauw. She then joined the Notre Dame University faculty. Her innovative course, "Book Publishing," was so popular that students had to enter a lottery to get into it. She went on to write four published novels of her own. In her retirement she taught adult literacy classes, a writing course for senior citizens, and intermediate bridge classes in South Bend, Indiana. At her request her body was donated to St. Louis University Medical School. In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to Friends of Kids with Cancer, 530 Maryville Centre Drive, Suite LL5, St. Louis, MO 63141. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Church, Webster Groves, MO, on February 27, 2010, at 10 a.m.
