Dr. Salvatore G. Cilella

SOUTH BEND - Services for Dr. Salvatore G. Cilella, 80, of Brookdale Drive, who died at 9:55 a.m. Thursday in his home after an illness, will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Sacred Heart Basilica, Notre Dame. Cremation will take place, with burial in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.

 

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County Inc. or to the Christ Child Society.

 

Dr. Cilella retired in 1983 as pathologist and director of the laboratory at Pawating Hospital, Niles, where he had served since 1961. He had previously served as assistant coroner of Cook County, Ill. He was a 1938 graduate of Loyola Stritch School of Medicine, was a lifetime member of Berrien County Medical Society, of which he was president in 1975, and served as first president of the Parish Confraternity of Christian Doctrine of Sacred Heart Parish, of which he was a member. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving at Guadalcanal.

 

He was born March 6, 1914, in Chicago, and lived in this area since 1952, coming from Chicago. On Jan. 18, 1941, in Chicago, he married Genevieve M. LaRocque. She died April 11, 1983. Surviving are two daughters, Mary Anne Cilella of South Bend and Theresa Anne Cilella of Providence, R.I.; four sons, Salvatore G. Jr. of Columbia, S.C., John S. of Orlando, Fla., Joseph P. of Chelmsford, Mass., and Michael A. of Cumberland, R.I.; two grandsons; and a brother, Carmine of Chicago.
