Kathleen Norris (Carter) Clark, 81, of South Bend, Ind., known as "The Queen" to family and friends, transcended this life around 3 p.m. on Mother's Day, May 9, after an illness.

Mrs. Clark was a mother, a poet, a teacher and a business woman before it was common. She was an avid scrabble player and a jokester with a great sense of humor. She was a charitable woman with a strong faith in God and a deep love for her family. Kathleen Norris Carter was born in Cornelia, Ga., on Aug. 22, 1922. She was the eighth of 10 children born to Bessie (Tribble) Carter and Frederick Carter, who preceded her in death. Early in her life she relocated to South Bend.

 

On July 3, 1945, in Hagerstown, Md., Kathleen Norris Carter married James C. "Bowtie" Clark, who preceded her in passing. She is survived by a daughter, Kathi L. (Carlton) Gill; and four sons, Bobby Joe (Maggie) Clark, Michael Clark, Wayne (Sharon) Clark and Mark Clark, all of South Bend. She is also survived by 25 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mary Lou Williams and Florence Ross; three sisters-in-law, Helen, Leola and Francis Carter; and a host of relatives and friends. She was preceded by a sister, Nicie Ann Welch; and by six brothers, Calvin, J.T., Fred, Floyd, Tom and Booker Carter.

 

The visitation services for Kathleen Norris Clark will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 13th, in the Clark--O'Neal Funeral Home, 2702 Lincoln Way West, South Bend. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 14th, in St. Augustine's Catholic Church, 1501 W. Washington. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. She was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church and the Matriarch of the Carter Fellowship Foundation.
