Sarah R. Coffman

Sarah R. Coffman, of South Bend, Ind., passed away on Friday, June 18, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. She was born on July 17, 1915, in Grand Rapids, Mich., to Joseph and Ida Greenberg.

 

On Jan. 9, 1938, as Sarah Greenberg, she married Harry Coffman. She earned her undergraduate degree from Indiana University South Bend and her master's from the University of Notre Dame. Sarah was a member of Temple Beth-El where she had taught Sunday school and was past president of the Sisterhood and of Hadassah. She had dedicated her time as librarian at Temple Beth-El where she was given an award for excellence in education. Sarah also volunteered her time at the Snite Museum.

 

Survivors include her husband, Harry Coffman of South Bend; her son, David N. Coffman of Tucson, Ariz.; and her sister, Florence Maio of San Diego, Calif. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael S. Coffman in 2001; by her sister, Marie Kaplan; and by her brother, Oscar Greenberg.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 20, in Temple Beth-El. Burial will follow in Hebrew Orthodox Cemetery, Mishawaka, Ind. Memorial contributions may be made on behalf of Sarah R. Coffman to the Michael S. Coffman Endowed Fund at IUSB, to the Temple Beth-El Library Fund or to a charity of the donor's choice. The Forest G. Hay Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
