Sister Dorothy Coomes CSC, 73, of Saint Mary’s Convent died at 10 a.m. Thursday in the convent after an illness. She was born Dorothy Marie Coomes on Nov. 4, 1913, in Owensboro, Ky. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross at St. Mary’s on Feb. 7, 1931, coming from Springfield, Ohio; was received as a novice, Aug. 15, 1931; and professed her vows Aug. 15, 1933. She was assigned to teaching in elementary and secondary schools of the Congregation, and served at St. Mary’s Academy in South Bend from 1972 to 1976. Her other assignments were in Maryland; Pennsylvania; Washington DC; New York City; New Jersey; Ohio; and Texas. In 1976 she was assigned to reside at Immaculata Hall Convent on St. Mary’s campus where she served as seamstress until 1984.

 

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Church of Loretto at St. Mary’s, with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery on the campus. Friends may call today in the convent where a wake service will be at 7 p.m.
