Lula D. Coon

SOUTH BEND - Lula D. Coon, 87, passed away after an extended illness at 1:30 a.m. Monday, April 28, in the Cardinal Nursing Center. Mrs. Coon was born on December 6, 1920, in Wolf County, KY, and had resided in the Michiana area for the past 62 years.

 

On June 16, 1937, in Angola, IN, as Lula D. Henry, she married Edwin M. Coon, who preceded her in death on Dec. 9, 1997. Lula is survived by a daughter, Velma (Sue) Ehresman of Bowling Green, KY; two sons, J. Michael (Gail) Coon of South Bend and David A. (Dottie) Coon of Elkhart; and a sister, Vivian Garmo of Spokane, WA. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 22 great- and four great-great-grandchildren whom she loved and cherished. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Edwin, and by a sister, Nancy Osborn, and a brother, Hoy M. Henry. Mrs. Coon retired in 1987 as owner with her husband from Lydick Hardware. They owned the business from 1949 to 1987. Mrs. Coon loved cooking, watching her grandchildren. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who cared dearly for her family. She will be sadly missed by her loving family and all who had the opportunity to know her during her wonderful life journey.

 

Visitation hours will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 30th, in the Hanley & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home, located at West Ireland Road/Indiana 23, South Bend. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 30th, in the funeral home, with Pastor Jennifer Johns-Gooding officiating. Burial to follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. The family request that all memorial contributions be made to The Center for Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637. The HANLEY & Sons "Southwest Chapel" Funeral Home handled arrangements and services and extend its deepest sympathy and heartfelt prayers to the Coon family.
