Wanda M. Cortier

NEW CARLISLE - Wanda M. Cortier, 86, of New Carlisle, Indiana passed away, Wednesday, June 18, 2008, at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. Wanda was born March 3, 1922, in Mishawaka, Indiana to Leroy and Bessie Mae (Wombold) Utterback. She retired in 1992, as the Assistant Law Placement Director from the University of Notre Dame and had previously been employed for five years with Westat in South Bend.

 

On August 19, 1944, at the Army Air Force Base Chapel in Reno, Nevada, Wanda married Richard F. Cortier who preceded her in death on May 29, 2006. She is survived by, her son, William (Claudine) Cortier of Bristol, Indiana; her daughters, Chris Cortier, and Carol Whiteman, both of New Carlisle and Denise Warner of Venice, Florida; eight grandchildren, Melanie (Christopher Orr) Cortier, Christopher (Sia) Cortier, Holli Hixenbaugh, Valerie Cortier, Josilyn Hixenbaugh, Zacchary Hixenbaugh, Danielle Cortier and Ian (Amber) Whiteman; a great-granddaughter, Kharina Mathew; and a great-grandson, Aidan Whiteman; and her brother, Dale (Lee) Utterback of Granger, Indiana. Wanda was a member of St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, the Woodmen of the World #6001, T.O.P.S. in New Carlisle, Indiana, and the Farm Bureau. She graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1940, was a Girl Scout leader for many years, a volleyball coach, and she and her husband ran a concession stand at the South Bend Motor Speedway many year ago.

 

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 22, 2008, at the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, where a parish Rosary will be prayed at 3:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2008 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Catholic Church, New Carlisle, Indiana.
