Services for Rev. William J. Coughlin CSC, 85, of Holy Cross House at Notre Dame, who died Friday afternoon in St. Joseph Medical Center, South Bend, will be at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday in Moreau Seminary Chapel at Notre Dame. Burial will be in Holy Cross Community Cemetery. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Monday in the Chapel, where a wake service will be at 7:30 p.m.

 

He was born Aug. 31, 1904 in Chicago. He entered the seminary at age 16 and made his first profession of vows in the Congregation of Holy Cross on July 2, 1925, and was ordained to the priesthood June 24, 1933. Following further studies at John Hopkins University he was assigned to the University of Portland in Oregon, where he taught mathematics and, for a time served as University Prefect of Discipline. During his 51 years at the University of Portland he also regularly offered weekend assistance at Sacred Heart Parish in Battle Ground, Wash., and at the parish mission in Yacolt, Wash. In 1987 he moved to Holy Cross House at Notre Dame.
