Rev. Matthew A. Coyle CSC, 63, chaplain at St. Mary’s Convent on St. Mary’s College campus, died Monday afternoon is St. Joseph Hospital, South Bend. He taught English at the University of Notre Dame from 1937 to 1948, and for many years was director of the University Theatre. He was a faculty member at Portland University in Oregon from 1929 to 1937, and at St. Edward’s University from 1923 to 1925. A native of Rhinelander, Wis. he was a 1918 Notre Dame graduate. He was ordained in Sacred Heart Church at Notre Dame June 24, 1923. He held masters degrees from Catholic University of America, Washington DC and Yale University in New Haven, Conn.

 

The body will be in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto at St. Mary’s College until 7 p.m. today and then will be taken to Corby Hall at Notre Dame, until the funeral services at 8:30 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church at Notre Dame with burial to follow in Community Cemetery.
