Worden R. Custard

Sept. 27, 1923 - Jan. 6, 2002

Worden R. Custard, 78, of Charles Street, and a lifetime resident of South Bend, Ind., died Sunday morning, Jan. 6, in Healthwin Hospital.

Worden was a machinist at Bendix for 42 years, retiring in 1985.

He was born Sept. 27, 1923, in South Bend, to Aaron Earl and Esther Pearl (Clark) Custard, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Imogene Morningstar; and by two brothers, Paul and Claude Custard.

On July 1, 1943, in South Bend, he married Helen B. Davis, who survives. He is also survived by three daughters, Susan J. (James) Biggs of South Bend, Marcia A. (David) Qualls of Osceola, Ind., and Patricia K. Deethardt of Indianapolis, Ind.; three sons, Phillip E. (Betsy) Custard of Mishawaka, Ind., Scott M. Custard of Costa Rica and James K. Custard of Chicago, Ill.; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and by a brother, Boyd D. Custard of Sunnyvale, Calif.

Worden was a lifelong bowler and a member of Eagles Lodge, Golden Gang Chippewa Bowl Senior League, Bendix Golf League, and UAW Local 9. He won the South Bend Bowling Association City tournament in 1982 and, in 1986, shot a "hole in one" on the fourth hole at Robin Hood.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Little Flower Catholic Church, South Bend. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today in the HICKEY Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, 289-1000, where a Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m.
