Rev. Stephen M. Cvaniga

Aug. 3, 1914 – Oct. 28, 1993

 

Mishawaka - Rev. Stephen M. Cvaniga, 79, of St. Paul’s Retirement Community, South Bend, formerly of Mishawaka, died at 11:34 p.m. Thursday in the nursing home. Rev. Cvaniga was ordained May 18, 1940, and was assigned as assistant pastor at St. Bavo’s Catholic Church from 1940 to 1963. He retired in 1980 as the pastor of St. Bavo’s.

 

He was born Aug. 3, 1914, in Colorado and lived in Mishawaka since 1940. He is survived by five sisters, Mary Kaminsky of Whiting, Ind., Ann Cvaniga and Sue Wilson, both of Denver, Colo., Ruth Thoesen of Cold Spring, Texas, and Dolores Toth of Hammond; three nieces and six nephews.

 

Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the church. Hahn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Bavo’s Parish.

Rev. Cvaniga had been chaplain at Marion Hill Retirement Community, and from 1948 to 1980 at the Mishawaka Fire Department. In 1975 he was named Vicar of South Bend Deanery.
