Rev. Valentine Czyzewski CSC

Twenty minutes before he was to have performed a marriage ceremony, Rev. Valentine Czyzewski CSC, 67, pastor of St. Hedwig’s Polish Catholic Church succumbed to an attack of heart trouble induced by the heat. Father Czyzewski, a graduate of Notre Dame had been a pastor in this city for almost 40 years, having organized the first Polish church in this city. He was known personally to almost every Polish resident here, and the news of his death caused wide spread grief in the western section of this city. Father Czyzewski was born Feb. 14, 1846 in Russian Poland. After studying in the monasteries of his native land, he came to America in 1869, entering Notre Dame University in 1872, and being ordained to the priesthood in 1876. He was a member of the order of the Holy Cross. In 1877 he was placed in charge of St. Hedwig’s parish, then known as St. Joseph’s.

 

The funeral will be held Thursday morning at 10 o’clock. Rt. Rev. Bishop Paul Rhode, of Chicago, will celebrate pontifical mass, assisted by Rt. Rev. Bishop Alerding, of Fort Wayne. Very Rev. Andrew Morrissey CSC, of Notre Dame, will act as arch-priest, and Rev. Anthony Zubowicz CSC, and Rev. Roman Marchiniak CSC will also assist. The deacons of honor to Bishop Alerding will be Rev. John F. DeGroote, and Rev. Joseph Scherer. Bishop Aldering will givbe the final absolution after mass. The sermon after mass will be delivered by Rev. Casimir Sztuczko, of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Chicago.

 

The sermon at the cemetery will be delivered by Rev. Emmanuel Wrobel, of Fort Wayne. The church trustees will be the honorary pallbearers, and the active pallbearers will be chosen from the clergy. The societies of all the Catholic churches in the city will turn out incorporate. The entire funeral arrangements have been placed in the hands of Rev. M. T. Szalewski.
