Mary Martha DeMetz

MISHAWAKA - Mary Martha DeMetz, 93, of Mishawaka, passed away peacefully Saturday at 8:07 a.m. in St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka Campus. Mary was born on January 25, 1914, in South Bend, as the daughter of Julius and Emma (Matthys) Van De Keere. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Arthur, Henry, August, Joseph and Charles Van De Keere, and a son, Richard De Metz, on November 15, 2003.

 

On January 26, 1935, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, Mary Van De Keere married Charles De Metz. He preceded her in death on June 3, 1955. Mary is survived by a daughter, Delores (Patrick) O' Donnell of Littleton, CO; a son, Donald (Patricia) De Metz of Mishawaka; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn De Metz of Mishawaka; ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and brothers, Raymond Van De Keere of Wakarusa and Frank Van De Keere of Lagrange.

 

Mary worked for Ball Band in Mishawaka and for Cook's Coffee Company, and then for Kelor Inc. as sewing machine operator before her retirement in 1984. After her retirement she volunteered for St. Joseph Hospital in Mishawaka. Mary loved playing cards, especially euchre. She often played at Howard Park Community Center, and BK Club in Mishawaka. Mary was a former member of St. Monica's Catholic Church, and a member of St. Bavo's Catholic Church, Women of the Moose, Mishawaka, Women's auxiliary of Eagles Erie 283 in Mishawaka, and BK Club Ladies Auxiliary. She loved to sew and crochet, cook, dance and visit with friends and share stories of her and her family on the farm.

 

Friends and family may call on Tuesday, November 27, from 2 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, where a rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, November 28, at 10 a.m. in St. Bavo's Catholic Church, Mishawaka, with Rev. Barry England officiating. Burial will follow at Fairview, Mishawaka.
