Sister Rosemary Desmond CSC

Sister Rosemary Desmond (Sister Mary of Good Counsel), CSC, 88, was born in Woodstock, Ill., to the late Daniel and Maude Hayes Desmond on Dec. 29, 1913. Sister is survived by her sister, Lucille Church, and sister-in-law, Louise Desmond, both of Woodstock; and by her brother, Daniel Desmond of Sterling, Va. She is also survived by her nieces, Mrs. Thomas Schroeder and Jan Melluzzo.

 

Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, Feb. 2, 1932, and made her first profession Aug. 15, 1935. She was trained as an elementary teacher and taught for three years at St. Vincent's, Elkhart, Ind., five years at St. Joseph's, and three years at St. Patrick's, both in South Bend, Ind. She was principal and teacher for two years at St. Mary's Junior School at Notre Dame.

 

Sister received her master's degree in biology, and taught biology and chemistry for five years at St. Mary's in Michigan City, Ind. She then was principal and teacher at Holy Redeemer, Flint, Mich., 1952-1958, and then was assigned to Bishop Noll, Hammond, Ind., as a biology and chemistry teacher, 1958-1959. Sister returned to St. Joseph's, South Bend, as assistant principal for six years and then moved to St. Mary's Academy, South Bend, as assistant principal, dean and guidance office for three years. Sister Rosemary received certification in counseling and was assigned to Bishop Noll, Hammond, as counselor in the high school, 1967-1969, and again in 1975-1981. At St. Mary's, Woodstock, Ill., she was assistant in the office and secretary in the guidance office, and at Marian Central, Woodstock, Sister was assistant principal, 1970-1975.

 

In 1981-1994, Sister Rosemary retired to Saint Mary's and remained active as secretary in Holy Cross Shared Services. As Sister's health declined, she became active in the prayer ministry at Saint Mary's Convent. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556.

 

Wake services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 24, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 25, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame. The Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
