John J. Detzler

John J. Detzler, of 322 Cushing St., investigator for the Indiana State Gross Income Tax Division until his retirement last June 1, died at 11:40 a.m. Monday in Memorial Hospital after two weeks illness.

He was born in Seebringville, Ontario, Oct. 31, 1883, and came here 70 years ago from Canada. He was married here in 1907 to Miss Thekla King, who survives him. He also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Eugene C. Knoblock, of South Bend; three sons, King Detzler, of Oswego, Ill., formerly employed as night telegraphic editor for The Tribune and the old South Bend News-Times; Dickson F. Detzler, a supervisor for the Studebaker-Packard Corp., and Jack J. Detzler director of the South Bend-Mishawaka Center of Indiana University; five grandchildren, and a sister, Mrs. Frank McGuire, of Berwyn, Ill.

Detzler was a long time member of St. Paul's Church and was a member of St. Joseph Lodge 45, F. & A. M. and South Bend Commandery 13, Knights Templar. In early years he was prominent in Democratic politics and on the 1930's served as constable of Portage Township.

Friends may call after 7 p.m. today in the Orvis Funeral Home, where the funeral will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday. Rev. John Wolf, pastor of St. Paul's Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.

Pallbearers for the funeral services at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Orvis Funeral Home for John J. Detzler, of 322 Cushing St., will be William O. Brandenburg, Edward Salyer, Frank McGuire, William H. Hinton, Robert D. Hinton and James K. Detzler.

 

Mr. Detzler was investigator of the Indiana State Gross Income Tax Division until his retirement last June 1. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery.
