Raymond J. Donovan

March 27, 1920 - Feb. 5, 1997

Raymond J. Donovan, 76, of South Bend, Ind., died at 1:05 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5, in Regency Place Healthcare and Rehabilita-tion Center, following a leng-thy illness.

Mr. Donovan retired from the South Bend Tribune in 1987 as the National News Editor after 35 years service. He had also been employed at the University of Notre Dame as the Publicity Director from 1942 to 1945, and at the Logansport Pharos-Tribune as the Sports Editor.

Mr. Donovan was born March 27, 1920, in Indianapolis, Ind., to Raymond J. and Carolyn (Thompson) Donovan, who preceded him in death.

On Oct. 12, 1974, in South Bend, he married Joann Olson, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Patricia A. Noffsinger and her twin brother, Michael Donovan, both of South Bend; four stepdaughters, Chrysanne Hill of Westerville, Ohio, Taylor Adams of Scottsdale, Ariz., Susan Preble of Tucson, Ariz., and Kimberly Hauflaire of South Bend; 12 grandchildren, Tina and Lee Noffsinger, Dawn and Jeffery Donovan, Elizabeth and Emily Hill, Alexis and Grant Adams, Lauren and Tyler Preble and Danielle and Bridgette Hauflaire; a great-grandson; and his ex-wife, Dorothy (Gresk) Arelt of Mishawaka, Ind., and Texas.

A brother, Robert Donovan, preceded him in death in 1989.

Mr. Donovan was a graduate of Hammond High School, and was a 1942 graduate of the University of Notre Dame. He was a member of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, the South Bend Tribune 25-Year Club, the University Club and the South Bend Press Club.

Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William St., with Rev. Karen Cornwell of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church officiating. Cremation will follow services, with burial at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday in the funeral home.
