John James Dougherty Sr.

SOUTH BEND - John James "Jack" Dougherty Sr., 80, of South Bend, passed away Monday following a brief illness. Jack was born July 24, 1927, in New York City, son of Albert and Marie Dougherty. He grew up in South Bend and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1944. Jack then served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He graduated from Purdue University in 1950 from the School of Pharmacy. Jack began his career working with his father at Indiana Pharmacy in South Bend. He later worked for several pharmacies in northwest Indiana including Methodist Hospital in Gary. Jack eventually retired from CVS Pharmacy in Mishawaka in 2001.

 

On December 20, 1952, Jack married Shirley Rzeszewski of South Bend. In 1956 the couple moved to the Merrillville area and raised their family until they returned to South Bend in 1993. Jack's surviving family includes his wife of 55 years, Shirley; children, Michele (Paul) Holley of Merrillville, Patrick (Pam) of Portage, John Jr. (Deb) of Mooresville, Terence (Melissa) of Portage, Brian (Rachel) of Goshen, Christine Den Hartigh of Hudsonville, MI, and Victoria (Dennis) Yancey of Amelia, OH; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Howard Rzeszewski, formerly of Palm Springs, CA; and a sister-in-law, Lorraine Ohlman of Plainfield. Besides his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his sister, Sr. Marie Albert Dougherty, F.D.C., and his brother, James Dougherty. Jack was a member of St. Hedwig Parish, the Holy Name Society, and was treasurer of St. Hedwig's Golden Cluster. He was also a 3rd degree Knight of Columbus Council 5570, a member of the Purdue Alumni Association and the Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity.

 

Friends may visit with Jack's family Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. in St. Hedwig Memorial Center, 331 S. Scott Street, South Bend. Memorial services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Hedwig Parish. Kaniewski Funeral Home of South Bend is handling the arrangements.
