Howard M. Dunning

Feb. 17, 1915 - June 5, 1998

SOUTH BEND - Howard M. Dunning, 83, of Madison Road, South Bend, Ind., died following a five-year battle with cancer at 12:10 a.m. on Friday, June 5, in his residence.

He was born in Mishawaka, Ind., on Feb. 17, 1915, and had lived in this area most of his life.

He had been a member of Albright United Methodist Church since 1933. He was a World War II Army veteran, and a first-year charter member of the Americana Antique Engine Society. Howard retired as a millwright from Uniroyal in 1977.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Anna (Jones) Dunning; a sister, Mary Pighi; and by two brothers, Jack and Lloyd Dunning.

He married the former Fern E. Baker in Mishawaka on Jan. 18, 1953. She survives.

He is also survived by his daughters, Lauretta (Jerry) Anders and Sharon (Vince) Zmudzinski, both of South Bend; two sons, Steve (Lisa) Dunning of Leo, Ind., and Monty (Sherri) Dunning of Bremen, Ind.; 10 grandchildren, Mary, Christine and Sarah Anders, Jessica and Nicole Zmudzinski, Audrey and Blair Dunning, Aby, Ben and Charlie Dunning; a sister, Lois Stutsman of Springfield, Ohio; and by a brother, Cecil Dunning of San Carlos, Calif.

Howard was a loving husband, father and grandpa. He had many friends and acquaintances. His life was filled with friendship and love. In life Howard was a loving, kind person who in death found bravery and peace.

Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, in the Bubb Funeral Chapel North, 3910 North Main Street, Mishawaka.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday in Albright United Methodist Church, with Rev. Ken Mahan officiating. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, Ind.
