Richard H. Dunnuck Sr.

NILES - Richard H. Dunnuck Sr., 80, of Redfield Road, Niles, MI, died at 9:41 a.m. Thursday, October 15, 2009, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, IN, following an extended illness. Mr. Dunnuck was born on December 14, 1928 in South Bend, IN, to Royce and Blanche (Walters) Dunnuck. He lived in Niles for 43 years coming from North Liberty, IN. Richard retired after 28 years of service from Bendix Corporation in South Bend. He was a member of Saint Paul's Lutheran Church in Niles. He served as chairman of the board of AAA Federal Credit Union in South Bend. He has also served on the Brandywine School Board from 1981-85, the Berrien County Juvenile Board, and the Four Flags Apple Festival Committee. He was the past recipient of the Brandywine Citizen of the Year award. Richard was a dedicated adult volunteer to the Boy Scouts of America, serving as Scoutmaster for 50 years with Troop 316 at Sumption Prairie, South Bend and Troop 550 at Trinity United Methodist Church, Niles. Twenty scouts earned the rank of Eagle Scout under his leadership, and he earned the Silver Beaver Award. He was on the Wood Lake Property Committee for 35 years and served as chairman for 25 years. Richard was the director of Will Welber Family Camp for 25 years ending in 2006. On November 9, 1947, in Saint Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mishawaka, Indiana, he married the former Betty Jean Hoffman with whom he celebrated the Sixtieth Anniversary of marriage in 2007. He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Dunnuck and by their children, Richard H. (Ruth) Dunnuck Jr. of Julian, NC, Vickie (John) Barker of Niles, Peggy (Glen) Lehmann of Mebane, NC, Michael (Christine) Dunnuck of Conklin, MI and Otto (Dawn) Dunnuck II of Niles; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Otto Dunnuck, Royce "Ed" Dunnuck, William Dunnuck, all of Niles, Paul Dunnuck of Rolling Prairie, IN, Robert Dunnuck of Wyoming, Arthur Dunnuck of Florida, Barbara Guthrie of West Virginia, Judy Barrett of Pennsylvania and Becky Schelkopf of Buchanan, MI, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jennifer Antisdel who died August 7, 1997. The funeral service for Richard H. Dunnuck Sr. will be held Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at 10 a.m. in Saint Paul's Lutheran Church, Niles, with Rev. Carl W. Bassett, officiating. Entombment will follow in the Nativity Mausoleum at Chapel Hills Memorial Gardens, Osceola, IN. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Monday in Halbritter Funeral Home, Niles. Contributions in memory of Richard H. Dunnuck Sr., may be made to Saint Paul's Lutheran Church.
