R. Charles Eades

SOUTH BEND - R. Charles Eades, M.D., 75, of East Jefferson Boulevard, died suddenly Monday morning, September 21, 1998, in Saint Joseph's Medical Center, South Bend. Dr. Eades was born on February 15, 1923 in Marion, IN to Ralph C. and Olive (Webster) Eades, who preceded him in death. He is also preceded by his son, Charles Joseph Eades.

 

Dr. Eades served in World War II and was discharged in 1945. In 1950, he received his medical degree from Loyola School of Medicine, Chicago, IL. Dr. Eades attended Medical Field Service School in 1952. He served in the Korean War and was commissioned as a captain in the U.S. Army in 1955. In 1956, Dr. Eades completed his resident training in psychiatry at Indiana University Center, Indianapolis, IN.

 

On August 20, 1949 in Chesterton, IN, Dr. Eades married the former Gratia M. Strack, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Beverly J. Shanks of Mesa, AZ, Elizabeth A. Schorgl of Shaker Heights, OH, and Catherine M. Decker of Pinckney, MI; three sons, James R. Eades of Carmel, IN, David P. Eades of South Bend, IN, and Robert C. Eades of Greensboro, N.C.; sixteen grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

 

Dr. Eades served as staff psychiatrist at Norman M. Beatty Hospital in Westville, IN from 1951-52. He was army chief for neuropsychiatric service at the United States Army Hospital in Fort Eustis, VA. While in Virginia, Dr. Eades served as assistant chief of the Mental Hygiene Clinic and acted as consultant for the United States Air Force Hospital in Langley and the Army Field Forces headquarters at Fort Monroe. In 1956, Dr. Eades became acting director of the Child Guidance Clinic at Indiana University Medical Center, Indianapolis, IN. Later that year, he came to South Bend as medical director of the Adult and Child Guidance Clinic. Dr. Eades established his private practice in psychiatry in 1962. Along with his private practice, Dr. Eades was clinical director for the Northern Indiana Children's Hospital until 1975. He acted as medical director for Bridges Group Home in Valparaiso, IN from 1995-97. Psychiatric consulting work included Family and Children's Center, Catholic Social Services, American Biodyne, St. Joseph's Medical Center Pain Rehabilitation Center, Porter Starke County Mental Health, Holy Cross Counseling Services, Visions Counseling Center, Alternative Counseling.

 

Dr. Eades held staff privileges at Memorial Hospital and St. Joseph's Medical Center in South Bend, and St. Joseph Community Hospital in Mishawaka.

 

His memberships included the American Psychiatric Association where he was awarded a fellowship in 1967, American Medical Association, St. Joseph County Medical Association, Phi Delta Theta, Phi Beta Pi.

 

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. today at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, South Bend, IN. Burial will follow in the Highland Cemetery.

 

Friends called from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Hickey Funeral Homes, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN where wake Services were at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be given to Corvilla or to Christ Child Society, and to Saint Joseph Parish Building Fund, South Bend, Indiana.
