Frank R. Eberhart, age 80 years, one of the best known men in this city and northern Indiana, dropped dead in his home, 225 Edgewater drive at 10 o'clock this morning, standard time, as the result of a stroke of apoplexy. He was not in the best of health for some time but the end came unexpectedly and as a great shock to relatives and friends. He was a lifelong resident of this city and vicinity.

Since the death of his wife about 15 years ago Mr. Eberhart has been spending his winters in California. He returned from the West two weeks ago with his sister-in-law, Mrs. Frank Dixon, who has made her home with him since the death of her sister.

Mr. Eberhart was born on the old Eberhart homestead, two miles northeast of Mishawaka, Aug. 10, 1841. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frederick G. Eberhart, early settlers of this county, coming here in 1835. He was one of 10 children and was the last of the direct family.

He enlisted in the war of 1861 when the final 90-day call came. On account of his youth he enlisted as a drummer boy.

For 50 years he was one of the best known business men in this city, first entering the grocery business where the O. E. Lang & Co. hardware company is now located at 111 Lincoln Way East. Then for about 40 years he was in business at 121 Lincoln Way East where the Tittle Bros. company are now located.

Mr. Eberhart's store was a meeting place for citizens and farmers and here the civic and other interests of the city were discussed. Much of the history written by Vincent Brunner, city historian, was gathered at these meetings. For about 30 years Mr. Eberhart resided at 113 South Church street, now occupied by James McKenna as a residence and real estate office. About three years ago he built a new home on Edgewater drive where he passed away.

Mr. Eberhart was married over 50 years ago to Miss Hattie Dixon, a well known musician of the city. She died about 15 years ago.

Mr. Eberhart was for many years the president of the former Mishawaka Business Men's association was a drummer in the famous Eberhart Drum corps, which played many years in civic processions and for many political rallies. He was a member of Houghton post, Grand Army of the Republic and of the Mishawaka Fellowship club. He was a lifelong republican and took much interest in politics.

Mr. Eberhart's father was a brother of the late Adolphus Eberhart, one of the founders of the Mishawaka Rubber & Woolen Manufacturing company.
