Ruth E. English

July 5, 1920 - Jan. 16, 2010
SOUTH BEND - Ruth Elizabeth (Lewis) English died on Jan. 16th in the care of Hospice House of South Bend, Indiana. It was a quiet end to a full and adventurous life. Ruth earned her B.A. at the University of Minnesota. She and NASA engineer Robert English hand-built their home in Fairview Park, Ohio. They raised three daughters, losing daughter Jane in 1978. Bob passed away in 2005. For 30 years Ruth and Bob explored the world as they pursued the art of nature and travel photo-essays, producing 25 programs and showing them in 11 states. An exhibit of Ruth's photography, "Beauty in the Commonplace," is currently showing through Feb. 19th at the Colfax Cultural Center, 914 Lincoln Way, South Bend, IN 46616. A mini-exhibit of her photocards can also be seen at the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library through January 30th. Still finding beauty in life are daughters, Susan (William Alkire) and Gail (Nels Leininger); grandchildren, Lindsay (Tanner) Caverly, Robert (Kathryn) Leininger and Lisa Leininger; and great-grandson, Peter Caverly. We continue to be inspired by Ruth's energy and creativity, and by her passion for nature and the arts. The family will be receiving friends from 1-3 p.m. on Jan. 30th in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home, 17033 Cleveland Road in South Bend, with the memorial service starting at 3 p.m. A reception will also be held on Feb. 20th from 2-4 p.m. in the Fireside Room at the West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church, 20401 Hilliard Blvd., Rocky River, OH 44116. Memorial contributions may be made to the South Bend Symphony Orchestra, 127 N. Michigan St., South Bend, IN 46601; or to Doctors Without Borders USA, PO Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741.
