Joseph Farkas (Dec. 30, 1914 - Nov. 27, 2000)

Joseph Farkas, 85, of Locust Road, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 10:15 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 27, in his residence.

Mr. Farkas retired in 1981 from Gilbert's where he was employed for 20 years as a tailor. He was a member of Our Lady of Hungary Church, and had been a lector for the Sunday Hungarian Mass since 1970. Joseph was also a member of the Hungarian Veterans Association and the William Penn Association.

Mr. Farkas was born on Dec. 30, 1914, in Keszthely, Hungary, and moved to South Bend in 1951. He became a United States citizen in 1965. On March 2, 1946, in Wels, Austria, he married Gizella Kalmar, who died on Dec. 21, 1986.

He is survived by two daughters, Eva G. (John) Nagy of Denver, Colo., and Katherine M. (John) Taylor of South Bend; three sons, Leslie S. (Debby) Farkas and Joseph E. Farkas Jr., both of South Bend, and Frank N. (Debbie) Farkas of Indianapolis, Ind.; six grandchildren, Erika Kaufman and Joneva Shipman, both of Denver, Allyson Farkas and Vanessa Farkas, both of Indianapolis, Meredith Wolfarth and Jennifer Farkas, both of South Bend; and by one great-grandchild, Theodore Braun Jr. of South Bend.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 1, in Our Lady of Hungary Church. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 30, in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue.
