James R. Farris

May 13, 1924 - March 3, 1999

James R. Farris, 74, of Corby Boulevard, South Bend, Ind., died after a short illness at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3, at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Ind.

He was born on May 13, 1924, in Sidney, Mont., and had been a resident of South Bend since 1961.

He married Alice Ginsterblum on Sept. 6, 1948, in Prairie du Chien, Wis. She survives.

He is also survived by a daughter, Joanne (Gary) Hinz of Anderson, Ind.; sons, Michael (Pam) Farris of Indianapolis, Fr. Bill Farris, OFM, of Batesville, Ind., John (Colleen) Farris, Thomas (Kim) Farris, both of Indianapolis, James C. Farris of South Bend; a daughter-in-law, Cathy Trewhella of Granger, Ind.; and by 21 grandchildren, Joe, Tony, Michelle Farris, Aaron, Amy, Andy, Adam and Tony Hinz, Maggie, Sherman, Clayton, Brandon and Marissa Farris, John C., Robert, Melissa, David and Kevin Farris, and Mary, Alex and Kenny Farris.

He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Farris, who died in 1988; his parents, Sam and Emma Farris; and by two brothers, John and Raymond.

Jim was a navigator in the United States Air Force with the 486th Bomb Group serving in England during World War II, reaching the rank of major.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Church, the Knights of Columbus Council 5521, VFW Post 9820, and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels for the last several years.

He was a loving husband and father, and especially enjoyed all of his grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 6, at St. Anthony's Church, with his son, Fr. Bill, as celebrant

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, with the Rosary at 7 p.m. Burial will be at Riverview Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Logan or to the Special Olympics of St. Joseph County.
