Sister Mary Augustina Flannagan CSC

Sister Mary Augustina, CSC, famous in history and literature for her bravery and courage as a nurse in the Civil War, died Saturday afternoon at St. Mary’s from old age. Sister Augustina, who was 81 years old, was born in Ireland and her worldly name was Miss Anne Flannagan.

 

She was one of the historic band of Sisters of the Holy Cross who went from St. Mary’s in 1891 to nurse the wounded soldiers and her great courage, tenderness and tireless energy for the wounded, sick and dying have been commemorated by Robert M. Chambers in his book “Ailsa Paige”.

 

She came to St. Mary’s from New York and had spent over 30 years of her life in the community. With the nursing sisters she was present at Cairo, at Mound City, Ill., where 12,000 patients were quartered in the hospital and also at Memphis, Tenn.

 

The funeral was held from the chapel at St. Mary’s this morning. Rev. D. J. Hagerty officiated at the mass and burial was in community cemetery.
