Richard K. Flood

May 18, 1926 - May 17, 2002

Richard Flood, 75, of South Bend, IN was born in Burnett, WA, the son of Kenneth and Mabel (Hammond) Flood who preceded him in death. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1950 and married Shirley Mary Gayner at St. Mary's Church in Wayne, MI on April 29, 1950. They lived 9 years in Cordoba, Argentina while Dick worked for the Kaiser Corporation during development of the Argentine auto industry.

 

In 1964 the family moved to Niles, MI while Dick was Director of Manufacturing Engineering for production of military trucks and jeeps at AM General Corporation. In 1984 he became the General Plant Manager of the Hummer Plant in Mishawaka and was responsible for the design of the equipment and production of the first military Hummers. He retired in 1989 to Sedona, AZ and returned to South Bend in 1998. Dick served as a volunteer in the International Executive Service Corps and also provided special expertise to the On-Site Inspection Agency for the US Government.

 

Dick will be deeply missed by his wife, Shirley, of South Bend, IN; brother James (Joyce) of Anniston, AL; children Kenneth (Cynthia) Flood of Dollar Bay, MI, Marion Flood of Portland, OR, Dolores (Matthew) Hunter of Clarkston MI, John (Rebecca) Flood of Hudsonville, MI, Audrey (John) Colasanti of Minneapolis, MN, James Flood of Calumet, MI, and Rebecca (Michael) Koning of Arlington, VA; grandchildren Kathryn, Robert, Elizabeth, Matthew, Stephen, Dominick, Benjamin, Kenneth, Lou and Madeline. Internment will be in Hancock, MI near his summer home in Eagle Harbor, MI. Memorial contributions may be made to Little Flower Catholic Church or to the Hospice of St. Joseph County.

 

Friends may call 4-7 Sunday in Little Flower Catholic Church, where a Scripture Service will be held at 5:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the church. The Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Rd. South Bend, 574-289-1000, is in charge of arrangements.
