Harold W. Flora Sr. (Oct. 12, 1923 - April 29, 2002)

Harold W. Flora Sr., 78, of 19762 W. 3B Road, Walkerton, Ind., passed away at 7:30 a.m. Monday, April 29, in his son's residence in Walkerton.

 

He was born on Oct. 12, 1923, in Plymouth, Ind., to Ralph and Ruth Baker Flora. He served in the United States Army during World War II, from March 11, 1943, to Feb. 6, 1946. He fought in two major battles, The North Apennines and the Po Valley in Italy. He earned the American Theater Ribbon, The EAME Theater Ribbon, two Bronze Stars, a Good Conduct Medal, The Purple Heart and The World War II Victory Medal.

 

Harold and Ethel Heeter were married Feb. 17, 1946, in Leiters Ford, Ind. She passed away June 23, 1992. They lived in the Culver and South Bend, Ind., area and then lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., for 18 years. Harold was also preceded in death by one brother, Robert Flora, and by a sister, Helen Hannabach.

 

The past four years, Harold resided with his son in rural Marshall County. Harold was employed as a carpenter most of his life. He was a member of American Legion Post 303, River Park, where he was a past commander.

 

He is survived by his son, H. Wayne and Darlene Flora of Walkerton; daughter, Jeannie and Chuck Sanchez of Colorado Springs; son, Michael and Charlotte Flora of South Bend; daughter, Rebecca and Mike Payne of Fountain, Colo.; sisters, Josephine Winrotte of Mishawaka, Ind., Betty and Steve Fisk of Florida, Treva and David Smith of Argos, Ind., Eva and Walter Holderread of Plymouth; stepsisters, Laura and Richard Gunder, and Brenda and Robert Wynn, both of Culver, Ind., and Virginia and Paul Bullock of Texas; stepbrother, Charles and Donna Kline of South Bend; and by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

 

Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, May 3, in the Van Gilder Funeral Home, 300 West Madison Street, Plymouth. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, in the Van Gilder Funeral Home, Plymouth, with Rev. Thomas Padberg officiating. Burial will be at Leiters Ford Cemetery, Leiters Ford.

 

The family requests memorial contributions be made to Marshall County Hospice.
