John B. Floyd
Feb. 3, 1941 - Sept. 21, 2007
SOUTH BEND - John B. Floyd, 66, of South Bend, formerly of London,
Kentucky, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 21, 2007,
in Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, Michigan. John was born on
February 3, 1941, in London, Kentucky, to the union of John Robert and
Geneva Wilma Floyd, who both preceded him in death. Sonya Rhines, his
eldest daughter, and one granddaughter, Andrea Rhines, also preceded him
in death. At a young age, John moved to South Bend. In 1962 he was
united in holy matrimony to Ramona Fox and from that union four children
were born. In 1971 John joined the South Bend Police Department where he
worked as an officer, retiring in 2006 as a juvenile detective. John
then received a Key to the City of South Bend in 2006 after dedicating
36 years as a police officer. At the time of his death, he was a
security guard at Washington High School and had been employed with the
South Bend Community School Corporation for 38 years, starting with
Central High School, Jackson Middle School, Riley High School and
Washington High School. Our dad was our hero, our inspiration, our pride
and joy. He has given so much of his life to the community. He was a
strong, loving father, a man with dignity who was always willing to give
a helping hand when the road was bumpy. He was always able to smooth it
out. He was a man of integrity. John definitely loved life. He always
had a way of making you smile when you were down. He was the best
father, best friend. John is truly a legend and will truly be missed by
all who knew and loved him. (The Floyd family) John leaves to cherish
his memories two daughters, Melinda Floyd and Glenis Floyd (Irdell)
Townsend; one son, Christopher Shawn Floyd, all of South Bend; nine
grandchildren, Lashanda and Sada Floyd, Steven, Ashley and Tananda Peck,
and Tanika Townsend of South Bend, Brandon and Adrian of Nashville, TN,
and Aaron of Chicago; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel
(Tommy) Thomas of Michigan City, Indiana, and Gladys Carol (Don) Smith
of Indianapolis, Indiana; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins
and friends. Funeral services for Mr. John B. Floyd will be held at
Lesea International Network of Churches, 530 East Ireland Road, South
Bend, on Friday, September 28, 2007, at 11:00 a.m., with burial
