Jana H. Foust

May 28, 1960 - Jan. 16, 2003

South Bend, IN Jana H. Foust, 42, residing on East Fairview, South Bend, Ind., passed away at 6:05 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend, after a seven-year courageous battle with cancer.

Jana was born on May 28, 1960, in Valparaiso, Ind., and had lived in South Bend since 1983, moving from Chesterton, Ind. On June 26, 1982, in First United Methodist Church in Chesterton, Ind., she married R. Andrew "Andy" Foust.

Jana is survived by her husband, Andy of 20 years; their children, Erin Foust and Ryan Foust, both at home; her parents, John Robert and Donna Beth (Hudson) Hammond of Chesterton; a sister, Beth (Al) Miegl of Chesterton; and by a brother, Robert (Lisa) Hammond of Overland Park, Kan.

Jana was an employee with the South Bend Community School Corporation as a first grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School. She formerly taught the second grade at Kennedy Elementary School. Jana was a 1978 graduate of Chesterton High School and a graduate of Purdue University, class of 1982. She directed the summer park program in Chesterton during her college years. Jana was a past member of Tri-Kappa, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Nu Chapter, and a member of the NEA. She was active with the PTO at Jefferson and Lincoln Elementary Schools. While at Jefferson Elementary School she was chosen twice by her colleagues as teacher of the year, and was nominated by the staff at Jefferson for the Indiana 2002 Project "E" Excellence in Education Teacher Award, becoming one of the finalists. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, South Bend, where she was active with the children's council and Sunday school program. Jana was a loyal wife, loving mother, and will continue to be her children's guardian angel in heaven.

Funeral services for Jana will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 20, in the Grace United Methodist Church. Rev. Hosea W. Drake, pastor of the church, will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family from 2 to 6 p.m. today, Jan. 19, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St., South Bend, and one hour prior to services in the church on Monday.
