South Bend Tribune 6/13/2002

Alice L. Freeman, 78, of South Bend, Ind., accepted her promotion to glory on May 22, 2002, in her home. Alice was born Dec. 11, 1923, to Clifton Edward and Emma (Whittaker) Ferguson in Detroit, Mich.

On Sept. 6, 1952, she was wed to her lifelong love and partner, Robert L. Freeman, who preceded her in death Aug. 9, 1983.

Alice was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church. She enjoyed working with people and helping others by doing volunteer work for several organizations including the American Cancer Society, Century Center, and Saint Joseph's Medical Center where she was recognized for volunteering over 2000 hours. Her greatest joy was traveling. Over the years, Alice visited countries which included Malta, Scotland, England, Germany, and her favorite, Switzerland. One of the highlights of her travels was to see the Passion Play in Germany.

In recent years, Alice had a number of health concerns which limited her ability to do the traveling she enjoyed and be active with the people she loved to be with. The cheerfulness and quiet dignity she had throughout her final years will be remembered by her friends and loved ones.

Alice is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Daniel Kolle of Rolling Meadows, Ill.; her son, Richard M. Freeman of South Bend; her four grandchildren, Joshua and Amanda Kolle, and Richard II and Jennifer Freeman; her brother, Stuart Ferguson of Columbus, Ohio; and by her sister, Grace Gremel of Fredericksburg, Va.

Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends in the Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William Street, South Bend, on Saturday, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. when a memorial service will be held. Inurnment will take place in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park Eternal Life Chapel.

The family request that contributions in Alice's name be made to the American Cancer Society.
