July 5, 1921 – February 26, 1989

Joseph Freitag, 67, of 1001 Mayflower Road, Lot 355, Countryside Village, died at 3:40pm Sunday in his home after an illness. Mr. Freitag retired from the South Bend Community School Corp.

He was born July 5, 1921, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident. On July 4, 1942, in South Bend, he married Florence vanGoeye, who survives. Also surviving are four daughters, Carol Whitteberry and Kathryn Greer, both of New Carlisle, Mary Lou Jasinski of Mishawaka and Donna Freitag of South Bend; two sons, Joseph Jr. of Mishawaka and Thomas of South Bend; 12 grandchildren, a great grandchild; five sisters, Ann Nagy, Mitzie Reiner, Josephine Chiszar, Hermina Takacs and Rose Nagy, all of South Bend; and a brother, Herman of South Bend. He was a member of the DFV German Club and American Legion Post 50 and was a veteran of WW II.

Services will be at 10am Thursday in Our Lady of Hungary Catholic Church. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9pm Wednesday in Zahoran Funeral Home, where a rosary will be said at 7:15pm by the Legion of Mary.
