Sister M. Yvonne (Elizabeth Lorraine Garrity), C.S.C., 85, died on Wednesday, Dec. 6, in Saint Mary's Convent, Notre Dame, Ind.

 

Sister M. Yvonne was born on Feb. 3, 1915, in Morris, Ill., the daughter of the late Edward Garrity and Marquita (Berner) Garrity.

 

She is survived by her sisters, Mrs. Herman (Marilyn) Olsen of Kankakee, Ill., Mrs. Lee (Lucy Ellen) Novotne of Morris and Mrs. Mary June Enger of Morris; and by nieces and nephews.

 

Sister Yvonne was an outstanding musician who taught both piano and violin students. She began teaching music at St. Mary's School, Michigan City, Ind., in 1935. From 1948 until 1956 she was assigned to St. Theodore's School in Chicago, Ill. After earning a master's of music degree at The American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, she spent three years on the music faculty at Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, as piano instructor. From 1960 to 1964, she again taught at St. Mary's School, Michigan City. In 1964 she was assigned to teach piano and music appreciation at St. Mary's Academy, South Bend, Ind. From 1968 to 1970, Sister Yvonne served as piano teacher and accompanist to the choral director at Bishop Noll High School in Hammond, Ind. In 1970 she was dean of girls at Schlarman High School, Danville, Ill. In 1972, Sister returned to Hammond to serve in religious education at St. Margaret Mary Parish for 10 years, while continuing piano teaching to adults in the area. From 1982 to 1985 she worked in religious education at Immaculate Conception School in Morris, Ill.

 

Sister Yvonne moved to Christ the King Convent, South Bend, in 1985, where she was involved in parish ministry to the aging, with special outreach to Healthwin Hospital. In 1989 she moved to Rosary Convent at Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, where she continued her ministry to the aging. Because of illness, Sister Yvonne moved to Saint Mary's Convent in 1992. She continued to serve others through the ministry of prayer.

 

Reception of the body in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, will be at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, with visitation until 10:15 a.m.

 

Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 9, in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, Saint Mary's, followed by interment at Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of the Holy Cross Ministry with the Poor Fund, Saint Mary's, Notre Dame, IN 46556.
