Rev. Joseph N. Garvin CSC, 74, deid Tuesday afternoon in Holy Cross House, Notre Dame, after a lengthy illness. He was a faculty member of the University of Notre Dame from 1940 to 1970 when illness forced him to leave teaching. During those years he was a member of the classics department, the Medieval Institute and associate editor of the institute’s “Publications in Medieval Studies”. He published three books on Medieval studies and numerous articles and bibliographical notices. He taught at Holy Cross Seminary from 1934 to 1936 and studied medieval language and literature at the Catholic University of America, Washington DC. Born on June 17, 1906 in Clyde, Ohio, he entered the Holy Cross Seminary in 1922 and professed his vows in the Congregation of Holy Cross in 1925. In 1929 he graduated from the University of Notre Dame and was ordained at Notre Dame on June 24, 1933.

 

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Church, Notre Dame with burial in Community Cemetery on the campus. Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Corby Hall Chapel, where a wake will be at 7:30 p.m.
