Sister M. Hildegardis Gettier CSC, 87, of Saint Mary’s Convent died at 6:10 p.m. Wednesday in St. Joseph Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born on Oct. 30, 1895 in Morris Ill. as Mary Elizabeth Gettier and entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross on March 18, 1916. She was received as a novice on Aug. 6, 1916 and made her first profession of vows two years later. She taught in elementary and secondary schools conducted by the order, serving at St. Joseph Grade School in South Bend, She also was one of the first group of Sisters assigned to teaching at Holy Cross Grade School. As a supervisor of schools, she served in the Midwest and Western provinces. Other assignments included positions in California, Utah and New York City. She lived at St. Mary’s Convent since 1970.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Loretto Church with burial in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, both at St. Mary’s. Friends may call at St. Mary’s Convent Parlors, where a wake service will be at 7 p.m. today.
