Jeannette N. (Nicosia) Gherardi, 70, of South Main Street, Mishawaka, Ind., passed away at 5:39 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25, in the Good Samaritan Hospital, Downers Grove, Ill. Jeannette was born on Jan. 19, 1932, in South Bend, Ind., as the daughter of the late Frank N. and Antoinette Nicosia.

On June 18, 1955, in Chicago, Ill., as Jeannette Nicosia, she married Leonard Gherardi, who survives. The beloved wife of Leonard, devoted mother of Anne Marie (Bruce) Trant of Glen Ellyn, Ind., and Lisa Antoinette (Andrew) Daniels of Oak Brook, Ill.; dear sister of Francis Nicosia. She was deeply loved by her seven grandchildren, Christopher, Connor, Drew, Caroline, Matthew, Emily and Catherine. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Loretta (Zano) Vannoni of Mishawaka and Lois Gherardi of Mishawaka.

Jan began her career in public relations with the Swift Company before entering the education field in 1957. She was a teacher in California, Massachusetts and Indiana. She spent 22 years at Grissom Middle School in Mishawaka as a teacher, guidance counselor and assistant principal before retiring. Jan received her bachelor's degree, her master's degree and a specialist degree, all from Indiana University. She and Leonard have resided on South Main Street in Mishawaka since 1965.

Friends may call from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 27, in the Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, where a Rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, with Rev. Robert Yast officiating. Entombment will follow in Fairview Cemetery Mausoleum, Mishawaka. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Lung Association of Indiana, Attn: Memorials, 319 S.
