Sister Kathryn Marie Gibbons CSC, 91, of Saint Mary’s Convent, died at 3:15 p.m. Saturday in her residence. Born Katherine Louise Gibbons on Oct. 10, 1897 in Washington DC, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, at St. Mary’s on Oct. 2, 1916, coming from Washington. She was received as a novice Aug. 5, 1917 and professed her vows Aug. 15, 1919. She taught in St. Joseph Academy, South Bend, and Washington DC schools from 1916 to 1938, when she was assigned Dean of Students, St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame. In 1951 she was elected Provincial Superior of the  Midwest Province and served in that capacity until 1955. She was then elected Superior General, serving from 1955 to 1967, when she came to St. Mary’s Convent to serve in various congregational services until 1978. She resided in the convent from that time until her death.

 

Services will be at 7 p.m. today; the Mass of the Resurrection will be at 4 p.m. Monday in the Church of Loretto with internment in Our Lady of Peace Cemetery, St. Mary’s.
