Robert M. Gillen: (South Bend Tribune 4/9/1999)
March 6, 1919-April 7, 1999 Robert M. Gillen, 80, of Old Sage Lake Drive, Mishawaka, Ind., died at 6:02 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7, in St. Joseph Community Hospital, Mishawaka. Mr. Gillen was employed in the South Bend, Ind., area until his retirement in 1971, but thereafter he remained active as a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 172. He was born on March 6, 1919, in South, and had been a lifetime area resident. On Oct. 5, 1940, in South Bend, he married Alice M. Setlock, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter, Mary Devereaux of Mishawaka; three sons, Robert D. (JoAnn) Gillen of Indianapolis, Ind., Thomas (Mickie) Gillen of Lafayette, Ind., and Dennis (Stella) Gillen of Odessa, Mo.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandsons; and by a sister, Frances McGovern of Wethersfield, Conn. He was preceded in death by a son, James P. Gillen. Mr. Gillen was a World War II Navy veteran, a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 624, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Loyal Order of Moose, and was a graduate of South Bend Central High School. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday morning in the Hickey Funeral Home, 3516 E. Jefferson. Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph County Cancer Society.
