Obituary: James E. Gilroy

Sept. 6, 1921 -- Nov. 16, 2004

                                       

James Edward Gilroy, 83, of South Bend, Ind., passed away in Hospice House on Tuesday, Nov. 16, of congestive heart failure.

He was born of the union of James E. Gilroy Sr. and Louise B. Adelsperger on Sept. 6, 1921. A graduate of Central High School, he served his country in the U.S. Navy on the U.S.S. New York during World War II. He was employed by the Indiana Bell Telephone Company, retiring in 1982 after 40 years of service. He was a member of St. Pius X Church, was a former scout master of Troop 505 of St. Joseph Parish, South Bend, the first commander of the VFW of St. Louis, Mo., during World War II, and was active in the Telephone Pioneers of America.

He is survived by his loving wife, Frances Hindman, who he married on Sept. 12, 1943, in St. Louis. He is also survived by five daughters, Patricia (Michael) Reed of Granger, Ind., Mary Lee Parrish of Mishawaka, Ind., Nancy (John) Wiskotoni of South Bend, Kathleen Gilroy of Mishawaka and Linda Gilroy of South Bend.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl, and her husband, Frank Piechowiak, and by his sister, Patricia A. Gilroy.

He is also survived by eight grandchildren, Michael and Tim Reed, Mark Piechowiak, Stacy (Matt) Griner, Lori (Jim) Snyder, Jim Wiskotoni, Heather Farrar and Molly Farrar. Also surviving are four great-grandchildren, Conner Snyder, Makayla Brown, Macy Griner, and Maitlyn Griner.

Friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 18, in the HICKEY Funeral Homes & Cremation Service, 17131 Cleveland Road, where services will be held at 7 p.m. Interment will take place at a later date at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger.
