Charles Joseph “Jovey” Goethals Jr.

Charles Joseph “Jovey” Goethals Jr., 60, of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Mishawaka, died at 430 p.m. Tuesday in Desert Springs Hospital, Las Vegas, after an apparent heart attack.

 

Mr. Goethals formerly operated the Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home in Mishawaka.

 

Mr. Goethals, a graduate of the Indiana College of Mortuary Science, purchased the Thallemer Funeral in 1955 from Mabel Thallemer, widow of Joseph M. Thallemer, who had founded the funeral a half century earlier, and operated it until his death in 1955.

 

The funeral home underwent three major renovations under Mr. Goethals’ directorship. In 1982 work was completed on a new 150-seat chapel.

 

In January 1986, Mr. Goethals sold the funeral home to M. Wayne Troiola and Donald E. Wright. Troiola, stepson of Mr. Goethals, took over as president and manager, while Wright assumed duties of vice president. Mr. Goethals became chairman of the board and served as an advisor and consultant.

 

Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home, Mishawaka is in charge of arrangements.

Services for Charles J. “Jovey” Goethals, 60 of Las Vegas, Nev., formerly of Mishawaka. who died in Desert Springs Hospital, Las Vegas, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Monica’s Catholic Church.

 

Burial will be in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.

 

Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday in Thallemer-Goethals Funeral Home, where a wake will be at 8 p.m.

 

Memorials contributions may be made to St. Bavo’s Catholic Church renovation fund or Sister Sharon’s class, also at St. Bavo’s

 

Mr. Goethals was born June 27, 1928, in Mishawaka and was a lifelong area resident. On April 19, 1974, in Mishawaka he married Millicent Obren Troila, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Joan Warren of San Diego, two step-daughters, Joni Madou of Mishawaka and Julia Troilas of Las Vegas; twon sons, Mark of San Diego and Richard of South Bend; a stepson, Wayne Troila, of Mishawaka; four grandchildren; and a sister, Janet Leinger of South Bend.

 

He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity at Wabash College, and St. Joseph Catholic Church, graduated from the former Indiana College of Mortuary Science, Indianapolis, and was a veteran of the Korean War.
