Robert L. ''Bob'' Goshert, 71, of Hilltop Drive, South Bend, Ind., died at 8:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 1st, in Memorial Hospital. He was born on Jan. 5, 1928, in Warsaw, Ind., to Melvin and Mae (Andereck) Goshert.

 

On May 7, 1955, in the First Presbyterian Church of South Bend, he married Carol Wilcox, who survives. He is also survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Jill and G. Scott Olbin of Roseville, Calif.; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Denise Goshert of Plainfield, Ill.; five grandchildren, Ryan, Robert and Shannon Olbin, and Carl and Cole Goshert; his brother, Max of Brooklyn, Ind.; and by three nephews, David, John and Robert.

 

Bob received his B.S. degree from Valparaiso University in social services and his graduate degree in social work from Indiana University in Indianapolis. He served his country in the Marine Corps and was honorably discharged in 1950. As a member of the First Presbyterian Church of South Bend he served as an elder, deacon and trustee. He served on the boards of Real Services, Madison Center and Habitat for Humanity, and was a member of the Kiwanis.  Bob was honored with the Meritorious Service Award of the state of Indiana by Gov. Robert Orr in 1988. Gov. Evan Bayh conferred the Sagamore of the Wabash Award upon him in 1990. He also retired in 1990 as the director of the St. Joseph County Welfare Department where he served for 35 years. In his retirement years he volunteered with Meals on Wheels, the Potawatomi Zoological Society and Disaster Relief of the American Red Cross. Bob had served since 1995 with A.N.D.I., the Adoption Network, Domestic International, Inc., a private adoption agency.

 

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday in the First Presbyterian Church, with Rev. David Morrow officiating. Friends may call two hours prior and one hour after services in the church parlor. Memorial contributions may be made to the church and to A.N.D.I. The Palmer Funeral Home, South Bend, is in charge of arrangements.
