Frederick S. Goss, 88, formerly of Abshire Drive, South Bend, Ind., died at 7:40 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 13, in the Blake Medical Center, Bradenton, Fla.

 

He was born on April 8, 1914, in South Bend, to William Edward and Amelia Frieda (Stuber) Goss. On March 16, 1939, he married Rena Mae Bruns, who preceded him in death on Oct. 7, 1990. Then on March 28, 1992, he married Myrtle Berry in Phoenix, Ariz. She also preceded him in death in May 1996.

 

On Sept. 19, 1997, Fred married a dear friend of the Goss family they had known over 60 years, Esther Morrow, who survives. He is also survived by a sister, Marguerite E. Goss of South Bend; Esther's daughter, Darlene Cole of Bradenton, and Darlene's daughters, Barbara Ellen of New York City, and Sue Ann (Robin) Hardy and Jean Marie (Richard) Patton, both of Bradenton; and by five great-grandsons.

 

Fred was the chief tool designer at Torrington Corporation in South Bend, retiring May 1, 1979. He was a former employee of the St. Joseph Bank and Trust Company, and was employed with the Bendix Corporation in the 1940s. He had graduated from James Whitcomb Riley High School in 1932, and attended business college and drafting school in South Bend. He was a member of Ridgedale Presbyterian Church, South Bend, was a 57-year member of St. Joseph Lodge #45, F&AM, and was a 50-year member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend. He was also a member of Avalon Grotto, Robinhood Golf Course, the Centre Township Lions Club and the Corvette Club.

 

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 19, in Ridgedale Presbyterian Church, 1406 E. Ewing Avenue, South Bend. Dr. Jack Volkers, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, Ind. The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, in the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 2718 South Michigan Street, South Bend, and one hour prior to services Monday in the church. Contributions in memory of Mr. Goss may be made to the Centre Township Lions Club.
