George F. Green, M.D.

May 13, 1900 - March 7, 1998

SOUTH BEND - Dr. George F. Green, 97, of Country Club Lane, South Bend, Ind., died of natural causes on Saturday, March 7, in Duncanville, Texas.

He was born in Dowagiac, Mich., on May 13, 1900.

On June 30, 1922, he married Geraldine McIntyre, who died on June 30, 1976. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Frances Martinov, who died on Dec. 3, 1954; and by a brother, Mark R. Green.

On July 23, 1977, he married Ruth G. Weiss, who survives.

He is also survived by a son, Dr. G. Richard (Barbara) of Mishawaka, Ind.; two daughters, Suzanne Parshall (William) of Eugene, Ore., and Joanne Knoop (Max) of South Bend; two step-daughters, Lynn and Susan Weiss of Duncanville, Texas; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and by one great-great-grandchild.

He went to undergraduate and medical school at the University of Michigan, interned for one year in Boston, Mass., and completed a four-year fellowship in surgery at the Mayo Clinic. He came to South Bend in 1929 and practiced medicine until 1979.

He was the team physician for the Notre Dame football team for over 30 years, starting with Coach Frank Leahy in the 1950s and ending with Coach Dan Devine.

He was made an honorary member of the Notre Dame Monogram Club in appreciation of the many years of volunteer service he gave to the teams. He attended his last Notre Dame football game on Nov. 1st.

Dr. Green was a member of many organizations including the American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons, Indiana State Medical Society, St. Joseph County Medical Society, Delta Upsilon Fraternity, South Bend Elks, South Bend Shrine Club, the Morris Park Country Club, Goose and Duck Club, Retired Physicians Group, and St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church.

He was a veteran of World War I and II, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Medical Corps.

Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in South Bend at a later date.
